Panalpina
Security, Accuracy and Productivity for a Global Leader in Transportation and Logistics
“If we discover a problem or a missing item when we’re unloading a shipment, we know right away,” says Kappler. “Before the upgrade, we didn’t know which precise item was missing and had to take a lot of time and resources to pinpoint the problem. The new system has increased productivity and reduced personnel expenses.” — Andrew Kappler, Business Unit Manager and Head of Operations, Panalpina
To Panalpina, speed and accuracy are everything. This world-leading provider of transport forwarding and logistics services specializes in intercontinental air freight and ocean freight shipments and associated supply chain management solutions. Panalpina’s 14,000 employees operate from 500 branch offices in 80 countries. Partner companies represent Panalpina in a further 80 countries, giving the Panalpina Group a presence in 160 countries on five continents.
The Challenge:
- Shipments must be on time and complete. Missing items will not be accepted and security is of primary concern when dealing with delicate and valuable goods. And in a highly competitive industry, productivity has a direct impact on the bottom line.
The Solution:
- In 2000, Panalpina introduced a proprietary software system, the Integrated Panalpina Warehouse System (IPWS), developed in collaboration with experts from Psion , in-house resources and other third-party development companies.
- In addition, a high-security WiFi network was installed in the transit warehouse, and Psion 7535 handheld computers were introduced for mobile scanning of barcode labels. The scanned information is uploaded from the handheld to the IPWS system via the WiFi network in real time.
The Benefits:
- The new system has helped Panalpina ensure the security and accuracy of its operations.
- The on-the-go nature of the data also allows customers and carriers to track the status of their shipments.
- Improved productivity.
- Enhanced customer satisfaction and trust.
