Yangshan Deep Water Port

Yangshan Deep Water Port

Yangshan Deep Water Port in Shanghai uses Psion Teklogix rugged vehicle mount computers with RFID and GPS capabilities.

Yangshan Deep Water Port project south of Shanghai, China, is one of the largest port development projects in the world. Phase III of the port is being constructed to support the dramatic growth in Yangshan Deep Port’s throughput.

The Challenge:

In 2007, average throughput increased by 26 percent over 2006. Yangshan needed to enhance its dispatch management of container trucks to reduce the average dispatch cycle from 16 minutes to a target of 10 minutes per container.

The Solution

  • Yangshan added 110 units of the 8515 Vehicle Mount Computer equipped with WhereNet RFID Real Time Location System and GPS for accurate location capabilities to their existing large installed base of Psion products.
  • The WhereNet solution provides location information in specific areas of the port where GPS is not available with the application set up to shift automatically between the two technologies as-needed.
  • The flexible connectivity options, efficient form factor and outstanding display of the 8515 made it the ideal choice for Yangshan.

The Benefits:

  • The average container truck dispatch cycle target of 10 minutes per container was met with 100 per cent tracking.
  • Yangshan is now able to accurately track and dispatch trucks throughout their entire facility.
  • The system improved the processes for driver assignments, information synchronization and security while allowing operations to remain fully functional even in extreme weather and poor lighting or if yard markings are unclear
