The Challenge:
SPAR Distribution Centres, a high volume distributor of consumer goods across South Africa, required a solution that improved the quality and efficiency of its picking process.
- Before turning to Psion Teklogix for a solution, SPAR utilized a paper-based picking system at its Distribution Centres (DCs) in Durban, Port Elizabeth, South and North Rand.
- Its paper-based system constantly led to problems such as low-quality picks, increased re-work, stock shortages, miss-picks, errors, etc.
- SPAR required a solution that significantly improved its picking process, but did not require substantial training that would overwhelm workers and hurt team morale.
The Solution:
- SPAR implemented Psion Teklogix’ speech technology to streamline its picking process
- The system uses speech recognition and synthesis to translate data from a host computer into spoken directions for the picker
- Transmissions are sent via RF network that connects the host computer to a wireless, light-weight terminal fitted to the picker’s belt, and a headset enables the picker to hear instructions and talk back to the system
- The system was implemented in a phased program over 6 to 8 weeks to ease workers into the changes and reduce frustration
