Wireless Solution Enables Airport's Central Maintenance Warehouse to Increase Efficiency with Easy-to-use Stock Management System
”The solution was implemented primarily to ease the workflow on the warehouse. This solution is easy to operate and rugged, reducing the number of data entry input errors as well as being robust enough to cope with the tough environment. We chose Psion Teklogix for two main reasons: the reliability of their products, which is very important to us, and secondly, the skill and availability of the SAP integration team.”– Orla Svendson, System Coordinator of Copenhagen Airports
The Challenge:
- Copenhagen Airports A/S owns and operates the busy Kastrup and Roskilde airports in Denmark. At these locations, 1350 employees are responsible for a wide variety of tasks ranging from planning for airport expansion in the future to daily cleaning and maintenance of the sites. In addition, Copenhagen Airports opens its infrastructure, including buildings and service facilities, to the many companies that have business operations on site.
- To facilitate the day-to-day maintenance of the airport, Copenhagen Airports A/S built a main warehouse and located several smaller depots and repair centres within the airport perimeter.
- The Airport wanted to implement a wireless barcode scanning solution at the central maintenance warehouse. The main warehouse also acts as a supply centre for the smaller depots supplying spare parts, office supplies, various accessories, tools, electrical items, etcetera.
- The wireless solution had to allow integration with the company’s existing ERP system. Furthermore, the solution had to be sufficiently flexible to allow integration of future upgrades to the system.
The Solution:
- Copenhagen Airports implemented a wireless solution based on the advantages a wireless solution can offer in large environments such as airports. The result is a system based upon radio frequency technology incorporating handheld terminals and TekRF middleware at the management level.
- Orla Svendson, System Coordinator of Copenhagen Airports responsible for the implementation and integration of the equipment explains, ”The solution was implemented primarily to ease the workflow on the warehouse. This solution is easy to operate and rugged, reducing the number of data entry input errors as well as being robust enough to cope with the tough environment. We chose Psion Teklogix for two main reasons: the reliability of their products, which is very important to us, and secondly, the skill and availability of the SAP integration team.”
- Another important requirement was for rugged terminals. The equipment had to be able to cope with being dropped on tough surfaces such as concrete. The solution is integrated with the SAP R/3 ERP system (Module ‘MM’) and all the goods flow communicates directly to the SAP System. Copenhagen has 20 permanent workers employed at the central maintenance warehouse. The warehouse supplies 150 maintenance workers with necessary spare parts and equipment etcetera. Some of these maintenance workers are required to go to the main warehouse to pick up the goods and required parts. They must use the handheld terminals to pick stock items themselves.
The Benefits:
- In an environment that requires quick response times, the airport’s main warehouse and smaller depots now benefit from a clear and easy-to-use stock management system. Consequently, the accuracy of stock picking has improved and has lead to greater efficiency in the workplace.
- The result is a very efficient and cost effective solution that is flexible enough to cater to further expansion. Copenhagen Airports A/S is already considering the implementation of SAP R/3 (Module ‘PM’) with a Psion Teklogix GPRS terminal.
